IN FOCUS: SERVICE SECTOR IN ARMM

According to the 2018 PSA data, the service sector contributed 39% (Php 22.6 billion) to ARMM’s economy. Since a dip in growth rate from 2013-2015, the service sector has shown a steady growth rate. In 2018, moreover, the service sector has shown the highest growth rate among the three major sectors in ARMM. 

Among its subsectors, Public Administration and Defense; Compulsory Social Security has consistently been the largest contributor to the sector’s economic output. In 2018, this subsector has provided a Php 8.28 billion or 27% of the total economic output of the service sector. Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities follows contributing Php 4.35 billion (19%). The Transportation, Store & Communication subsector, on the other hand, contributed Php 2.51 billion (11%). This is closely followed by Financial Intermediation which contributed Php 2.21 billion (10%). The Trade & Repair of Motor Vehicles, Motorcycles, Personal and Household Goods subsector have contributed Php 692 million (3%). While the remaining 20% (Php 4.52 billion) came from Other Services. 

In terms of growth rate, Public Administration and Defense; Compulsory Social Security had the highest growth rate among the service subsectors in 2018. The rising trend is also noticeable to the Transportation, Storage and Communication and Financial Intermediation subsectors. Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities, Trade and Repair of Motor vehicles, Motorcycles, Personal and Household Goods as well as Other services, on the other hand, have shown low or declining growth rate in recent years.
